Songbound Frontier

Keep the colorful hex battles and hero armies of Songs of Conquest, but let faction music spells reshape the strategic map between fights.

29% of Tactical 4X games found an audience, yet few came out lately. 14 of 47 judged games reached 1,000 reviews, and 21 came out in the last three years.

What it feels like

You feel like a conductor whose songs bend the land, so each march and each battle plays to your tune.

The core loop

  • March: Move heroes across the hex map to gather resources and take towns.
  • Sing: Cast faction songs on the map that change terrain, income or movement before the next fight.
  • Battle: Fight colorful grid battles where the songs you cast still echo as buffs and hazards.
  • Build: Grow towns and recruit units, with each faction's songs unlocked by its buildings.

One sitting

One sitting is a single scenario on a medium map, with a few songs cast and a handful of battles. It ends at a stronghold or a goal tile.

What sets it apart

  • Songs act on the strategic map, not only in battle, which gives spells more weight than simple buffs and debuffs.
  • Each faction has a different song set, answering the wish for more variety in spells and factions.
  • Single-player focus with a stronger skirmish AI, so PvE does not play second to competitive play.

The first playable

One hex map, one hero per side, three songs and a single grid battle. Prove that a map song changing the next fight feels good.

Scope

  • One map with a few resource types
  • Three songs that change tiles or income
  • One grid battle screen
  • One enemy hero with simple AI
  • Three or four factions with their own song sets
  • A short campaign with story scenes
  • Skirmish maps with a random map option
  • Multiplayer for hotseat or online play

Art

Bright layered hex scenes with chunky readable units and glowing song effects that spread across the map. The capsule shows a hero mid-song with colored waves rolling over the land.

Risks

  • The game is compared with Songs of Conquest and looks like a copy. Lead the store page with map-changing songs, the one thing that changes.
  • Players find spells shallow, as some say about the original. Give each song a lasting map effect and a counter, and test combinations early.
  • AI misuses heroes and ignores resources. Write simple rules for the AI to claim mines and avoid bad fights, and playtest on hard difficulty.

Price

$20 to $40: Most games in this band found an audience, and the original sits in this band.
