Last Bus Home

Four players share one battered bus and trade scavenging runs for fuel while a zombie swarm closes in behind them, so the whole co-op group moves together instead of resetting at a safehouse.

35% of Multiplayer Zombies games found an audience, yet few came out lately. 111 of 264 judged games reached 1,000 reviews, and 59 came out in the last three years.

What it feels like

You feel like a crew holding together a failing vehicle, deciding who steps out into the danger and who stays to keep the engine running.

The core loop

  • Drive: The bus moves along a route, burning fuel while the swarm behind it slowly gains ground.
  • Scavenge: Stop at a town and send players out to loot fuel, food, parts and ammo while the rest guard the bus.
  • Repair: Spend what you found on engine fixes, armor plating and turret mounts, and decide what to leave behind.
  • Escape: Pull out before the swarm arrives, and fight off anything that catches up on the road.

One sitting

One sitting is a single leg of the trip between two towns, with a few stops and a closing chase. A full run of several legs fits a long evening with friends.

What sets it apart

  • The bus is a shared base that moves, so the group always has a reason to stay together and a clock pushing them on, unlike the fixed bases in Project Zomboid or 7 Days to Die.
  • Roles on the bus, such as driver, gunner, mechanic and scout, give each player a job from the start, so new players are never left behind or kicked for being weak.
  • Co-op play against the dead with no player-versus-player removes the admin abuse and griefing that players complain about in open servers like Unturned.

The first playable

A drivable bus with a fuel gauge, one small town to loot, and a basic swarm that follows behind. Two players on a local or hosted session should be able to split into a driver and a looter and feel the tension.

Scope

  • One bus with a fuel meter and one repair type
  • One looting map with simple loot piles
  • One zombie type plus a chasing swarm
  • Two-player online co-op
  • Four-player online co-op with host and join by invite
  • Several routes with different towns and hazards
  • Bus upgrades and role stations
  • Survival needs and a gore system for the infected

Art

Low-poly or stylized 3D with a strong silhouette for the bus, a washed-out dusk palette and bright headlights cutting through the dark. A bus under a swarm reads clearly in a small capsule image.

Risks

  • Netcode for a moving vehicle with several players is hard and can cause bugs, which players punish in co-op games. Make the host authoritative, keep the bus on a simple route, and test with four players early and often.
  • The market has many open-world survival hits, and a small game can look thin next to them. Lean on survival, horror and gore, and show the bus loop in the first seconds of the trailer.
  • Repetition across towns can wear thin, and players want updates that change the game. Vary towns with events and hazards, and plan content drops that add new routes and bus parts.

Price

$10 to $20: Games in this band found an audience far more often than cheaper ones, and a small co-op game fits it without asking for a full-price commitment.
