Plague Alley Cleavers

Fight swarms with a co-op group in the spirit of Vermintide 2, but with heavier, bloodier weapons and a lasting mess that changes footing across the arena.

30% of Gore Hack and Slash games found an audience, yet few came out lately. 41 of 112 judged games reached 1,000 reviews, and 30 came out in the last three years.

What it feels like

You and your friends hold an alley against a flood of enemies while the ground turns slick and every swing carries weight.

The core loop

  • Defend: Hold a chokepoint with your squad as waves of foes push in.
  • Cleave: Swing heavy weapons that need commitment and spill blood on the ground.
  • Adapt: Use the growing mess to shift your footing, and watch where you stand.
  • Loot: Take weapons and gear between waves and pick a fixed upgrade.

One sitting

A single run is a short mission with several waves and a final push, around the length of one match. Players can queue with friends, then spend a few minutes on gear before the next run.

What sets it apart

  • Blood and gore build up on the floor and change footing, which Vermintide 2 does not do.
  • Gear unlocks are fixed and chosen, answering complaints about random stat rerolls.
  • No kernel-level anti-cheat and no paid weapons, answering what players disliked in Vermintide 2 and Killing Floor 2.

The first playable

One alley map with a single heavy weapon, one swarm enemy type and a floor that gets slick with blood. Check that slipping and positioning make the fight more interesting.

Scope

  • One alley map
  • One heavy weapon
  • One swarm enemy
  • Floor mess that affects movement
  • A few maps with different footing
  • Several weapons and enemy types
  • Co-op for a small group
  • Female protagonist options

Art

Dark, soot-stained alleys with a limited palette so the red mess stands out in a capsule. Use a few reusable modular pieces and simple character models.

Risks

  • Co-op games need players to be online to be fun, and many older hits now feel empty. Add bot allies so the game works solo and with a small group from day one.
  • Players turned against Vermintide 2 and Killing Floor 2 over monetization and anti-cheat. Sell the game once at a fair price, skip paid weapons and avoid intrusive anti-cheat.
  • The lasting floor mess may hurt performance or confuse players. Cap the effect, use simple decals and test footing changes with a clear visual cue.

Price

$20 to $40: Most games in this band found an audience, and a co-op game with several maps fits here.
