Crash Test Carnival
Keep People Playground's freedom to improvise and break things, but design rigged carnival rides and watch the messy results of your engineering.
46% of Gore Sandbox games found an audience, yet few came out lately. 25 of 51 judged games reached 1,000 reviews, and 12 came out in the last three years.
What it feels like
You run a carnival where every ride is your own wild invention, and you pull the switch on opening day.
The core loop
- Design: Build a ride from tracks, wheels, launchers and seats on a carnival lot.
- Rig: Add hidden hazards, timers and wiring that make the ride misbehave.
- Run: Load dummy riders and start the ride, then watch the chaos with free camera control.
- Rebuild: Pick through the wreckage, fix or escalate the design, and try again.
One sitting
You build one or two rides on the lot, run them and tweak, and finish by running the whole carnival at once. A sitting ends with a wild finale.
What sets it apart
- The ride-building setting gives the improvisation a clear goal, where People Playground is a blank canvas.
- Dummies are tougher and react with weight, so outcomes depend on the design, an answer to the thin enemy behavior players call out in Blade and Sorcery.
- Sharing rides as plain data keeps sharing safe, which answers the workshop worries in People Playground reviews.
The first playable
One lot, one ride track with a launcher and a seat, and a dummy that reacts to bumps and falls. Test whether building and running a ride is fun for ten minutes.
Scope
- One carnival lot
- Track, wheel and launcher parts
- One rider dummy
- Free camera and replay
- Several lots and ride types
- Rigging and wiring tools
- Data-only ride sharing
- Funny crowd reactions
Art
Bright, chunky 2D carnival signs and rides with a limited palette. A capsule with a ride mid-launch and a dummy flying reads right away.
Risks
- Close to People Playground, which is the best-known hit and may seem hard to compete with. Lead with the ride-building setting and goals in the store page and the trailer.
- Sharing and mods have caused trust problems in this space. Use data-only sharing and keep the early build mod-free.
- Misses lean on destruction, and rides could turn into a pure demolition game. Make engineering and rigging the focus, and keep wreckage as the payoff to a design.
Price
$5 to $10: This band did best, and People Playground sits in it.
