One Breath Descent

Descend a vertical cave on a single breath meter that refills only at shrines, so every route is a planned risk in a hard Metroidvania.

19% of Hard Metroidvania games found an audience, yet few came out lately. 35 of 156 judged games reached 1,000 reviews, and 57 came out in the last three years.

What it feels like

You feel like a diver on a held breath, counting every second and choosing between one more room and the long climb back.

The core loop

  • Plan: Read the shaft from the last shrine, spot routes and decide how much breath each one is worth.
  • Dive: Move through rooms and fight or dodge enemies while the breath meter drains.
  • Gamble: Push deeper for a pickup or turn back early to keep your breath.
  • Unlock: Light a new shrine, gain an ability and reopen old blocked routes.

One sitting

One sitting is a few dives from a shrine, each ending in a new shrine, a death or a retreat. You finish with one new ability or one shortcut opened.

What sets it apart

  • Breath makes backtracking a choice, which answers the wish for less tedious retracing in Hollow Knight.
  • Shrines are close together and every dive ends somewhere useful, so deaths cost little time.
  • A female diver lead and a Souls-like feel of tough, fair bosses set it apart from the retro-leaning platformers that missed.

The first playable

One vertical shaft with a breath meter, one shrine at the top and bottom, a jump, a dash and one enemy type. If a single dive feels tense and worth repeating, the idea works.

Scope

  • One shaft of about ten rooms
  • Breath meter and shrine refill
  • Jump, dash and one attack
  • One enemy type and one hazard
  • Four to five cave zones with distinct looks
  • Four or five abilities that reopen old routes
  • Several bosses with clear patterns
  • Map, shrine fast travel and a controller-ready layout

Art

Dark silhouettes against a glowing breath-colored light, with a limited palette per zone. A bright lit diver against a deep black shaft reads well in a small capsule.

Risks

  • Misses lean on 2D Platformer and Retro looks, so the game could read as generic. Lead with the breath mechanic and a Souls-like tone in the capsule and trailer, and avoid a retro pixel look.
  • Backtracking is a common complaint in this kind of game. Place shrines close, add shortcuts early and let the breath mechanic make each return trip a different decision.
  • A timer-like meter can feel stressful or unfair. Show the drain clearly, keep the drain rate steady and offer an assist option for the breath rate.

Price

$10 to $20: Most hits sat in this band or above, and this band did far better than the cheaper ones, which suits a smaller first game.
